Los Angeles CA– Fox’s immensely popular “So You Think You Can Dance” has plucked from obscurity an unsigned, unreleased artist and prominently featured her music for one of the show’s signature dances. Christina Perri’s “Jar of Hearts,” which was choreographed by Stacey Tookey, found itself front and center during last night’s SYTYCD. It was danced to by two of the show’s most popular performers, Billy Bell and Kathryn McCormick.
The track was rushed onto iTunes in light of the exposure and fans took instantly to the online retailer landing “Jar of Hearts” at #20 on the Overall Chart and #11 on the Pop Chart. She also saw the reaction on Amazon where the single was made available digitally and shot to Top 10 on the Overall Chart. On MySpace her player saw 2,800 plays in only 2 hours and her Facebook page was littered with comments within an hour of the East Coast feed. By the time the West Coast aired SYTYCD, “Jar of Hearts” had made its way onto iTunes home page and by the end of the night, Christina Perri was Google’s #1 trending search.
Perri moved to Los Angeles from Philadelphia with one suitcase and a guitar, hoping to follow in the footsteps of her older, musician brother (Nick Perri, of rock bands Shinedown/Silvertide). The year that followed includes many cliché Hollywood pitfalls, including a divorce by the time she’d turned 21. Says Perri, “I did everything wrong that you can do wrong.”
Now 23, Perri has rebounded in fine form and spirit, recording demos for her debut album. The songs caught the ear of managers at Bill Silva Entertainment, who also manage her favorite artist Jason Mraz.
Perri learned late last Friday about the song’s placement in SYTYCD, following a particularly grueling shift at a Café in Beverly Hills, one that had her daydreaming about dramatic ways to cease employment. “I was being yelled at all day. I got into my car and I wasn’t 100 feet from the café when I got the call. I screamed. Then I cried. Then I called my mom.”
“Jar of Hearts” is now available on iTunes.
